“The Cigarette Girl” by Carol Wolper

Elizabeth is a 28-years-old, lives in Los Angeles, and writes testosterone heavy action screenplays. She enters the period of her life she calls “the zone”, that seven-year period between the ages of 28 and 35 when women feel the pressure to resolve the marriage and baby issues.

Elizabeth describes her life. She begins to tell us the rules she lives by: the level of a crush, not following the dating rules, spotting a SCU (self-contained unit, talks the sweet talk but is all about himself), the “list” of sexy men and the five things that happen that make a girl forget Mr. Maybe is more than compatibility and fun and makes a real relationship.

Elizabeth uses this five step list with the man she is sleeping with, David, even though he has a 21-year-old-girlfriend. Elizabeth has found herself in a tough situation. Should she wait around for David to break up with his girlfriend and make a real relationship with her? Or should she wait around for Jake to break up with his girlfriend and make a real relationship with her? Will Elizabeth get her happy ending of love, marriage and babies? You will have to buy the book for yourself.
