Cornelius Falls – 1888

16-year-old Eliza fell in love with Nathan, 10-years her senior. Her father forbid her to see Nathan. They ran into each other and confessed they loved each other but cannot be seen together. They planned on meeting in the back room of Nathan’s store.

After three weeks without seeing or talking to him, Eliza skipped school and snuck into the back room of Nathan’s store. She found another woman working at the store. Her name was Catherine and she called Nathan her fiance Hiding in the back room of the store, Eliza overhead Catherine say to Nathan “it is a shame that a secret has to keep [you] in [my] life, but [I] still love [you], and in time, [you] will love [me] again, too.”
